Folded for mailing. ; Handwritten letter, signed T. Humphrey Ward, four pages, approx. 4 3/8" wide by 7 1/8". On printed letterhead The Burlington Arts Club, 17, Savile Row, W. , although this has a line through it and replaced with a written 61 Russell Square, Dec. 31. 86. To a Mr. Phelps, concerning the importation of art: "On Dec 22 the Times published some correspondence ...with regard to the duty on ...ancient pictures. The Assistant Secretary's letter stated that the Customs House would regard all pictures painted before 1700, as 'Antiquities'; & would therefore admit them free of duty." After further inquiry did not confirm this statement, "I venture to apply to you for an authoritative statement in the matter ..."
